This morning I was going through my private mail, and I ran into the following message. it imediately triggered the alert FISHING in my head: look at the marked items. something tells me this is from somebody with a Cyrillic keyboard or setup… I so speak a little Russian.

I saw the sender address, but those can still be spoofed... or just take a mailaccount somewhere else. the characters remain cyrillic.

or the codetables used by the sender are different then ours...

which may explain the appearance of the cyrillic characters in places where you expect to see some char with an umlaut.

Yup, I guess it is a mismatch in code pages. Such a mismatch can cause all kinds of strange characters; there is no reason to assume that cyrillics were the original characters.
