Getting more out of VS2010 Beta 2

A very interesting post on the new WPF and Silverlight designer (Cider) in Visual Studio 2010.

One of the things that stood out to me was this:

The other piece of advice I would give you for Beta 2 is to make sure you’re running either Vista or Windows 7.  Most of VS 2010’s performance testing was done using Vista and rather late we found that SuperFetch was giving us a profound improvement in performance.  You won’t get that on XP or server operating systems.

I nearly always test Beta software in VPC and I nearly always use a server OS. But when the product ships I install it on the ‘real’ hardware and a client OS. Now I never expect lighting performance from a Beta but I guess I could up my experience by switching to a different setup.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the RC, Beta 1 and 2 were very slow…

Hi Erno

We would love to hear how you get on with the new RC build which is available to the public NOW, here:

msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd582936.aspx

Only one caveat: if you are an SL4 developer, please note that this RC does not currently support Silverlight 4 development as Beta 2 did.

Thanks

Thanks Mark! I got it running already; I'll let you know.

I am sad to see SL 4 not being supported but I think I understand why:

1. No Go-Live licence for SL beta versions

2. What would be left to present on the MIX... ;-)

Thanks Erno.

I look forward to hearing your findings.

Sorry about the lack of Silverlight 4 support in the RC - Tim Heuer does a good job of explaining the ins and outs of the situation here timheuer.com/.../faq-silverlight-and-visual-studio-2010-release-candidate.aspx .
