The Source for Java Technology Collaboration

Every once in a while there's a smirk on my face caused by something that I think is very funny but is overlooked by others. Today Sun announced a new Java community because Sun's Java platform is going Open Source.

And here's my smirk: the site is called http://java.net

Actually, java.net is a global project space for open source projects in Java, not just the Java run time. And the domain is pretty ancient: registered on 18-Jun-1997. Those guys from Redmond weren't even doing managed netty stuff back then.

Maybe Sun should rename Java 6 to "Dot Com". That would be hilarious. ;)

Smirking because Microsoft lacked the creativity to come up with a real product name. ;)

Isn't it amazing that I can write anything about Microsoft and as soon as I mention Java (and not even criticising it) my blog gets comments...

Anyway it is good to know I am being watched :)

I agree with Jeroen. The .net domain is older than Microsoft .NET, which is still IMHO a very confusion product name.

I don't care who was first... It just made me laugh. BTW: Microsoft dropped the .NET thing as a product name/line/vision. It is only the .NET Framework that is still called .NET. (And of course Visual Studio .NET)
