  1. Welcome Bertrand to the blog community, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be interesting 🙂

I’m not really a DB kinda guy, I can implement a database, but managing 3900 databases is a bit too much for my liking ;P.

I got a good tip on moving/deleting the pending file rename operations node from the registry. Export them first, this way it’s easier to restore them if you mess up the installation anyway.

  2. Good tip, I usually rename them and then delete them afterwards, but exporting is a much cleaner method.

  3. Sounds like it’s easy if you write some kind of tool for this so we don’t have to rename (or delete) them manually every time.

  5. Hi,

I stumbled across your blog at the end of the PASS conference. I’m wondering if you can tell me if any of the shared components of the default 2005 instance lose availability when installing a named instance?

    Thanks!

  6. Hi Michell,

Sorry for the late response, I didn’t see your comment till now.

The answer is no. They won’t lose availability.

  7. Hi BertrandR,

I required some info regarding the replication of our SQL Server environment.
We currently have a Clustered environment running SQL Server 2000 clustered instance.
Now we want to create a New Cluster running SQL Server 2005 clustered instance with the SAME Name, IP as of the current environment.
This is to migrate my databases to SQL Server 2005 without changing the database name,IP.
Can it be done by taking the previous environment offline and installing new sql 2005 instance?
    Please provide the reference also.

    Thanks,
    Nitin

  8. I must say I haven’t tested it, but I forsee problems with software compatibility. We always migrate to a differently named server when migrating from 2000 to 2005 because not all applications can handle the change.

If you don’t change the servername there might be applications that connect to your server without your knowledge (yea that’s bad, but it happens) that will start to fail once you’ve moved.

Microsoft has written some articles on the subject of upgrading SQL, you can find one of them here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/sqlupgrd.mspx .

Upgrading SQL is not something you should take lightly, it has a lot of impact on your applications !
